Teaching aims:
At the end of this lesson, students are supposed
1. to know and understand “can”refers to the present ability and “could” means the ability in the past;
2. to understand that “can”, “could”, “may” are used to ask for permission in certain contexts;
3. to be able to use “what” and “how” to expression strong feelings. Teaching difficulty:
1. how to answer questions using “can” “may” “could” to talk about ability or permission;
2. to use “can” “could” “may” and exclamation in real contexts. Teaching procedures: Step I. Lead in
First have a free talk with the students. Ask the students their feelings about grammar. (boring, difficult, useful, important, frightening). Encourage them with three instructions. (to know the meaning; to get the rules(規(guī)則);to practice enough) Step II. Presentation and practice of “can” and “could” “be able to”
1.Take a boy in our class as an example, who is very clever and plays computers well. Get students to know how to express abilities. Then lead them to the rules. 2. Make a dialogue using “can”, “could” and “be able to” to talk about ability. Step III. Presentation and practice of “can” and “could” “may”
1. Go on with the example boy. He played games very late last night. So he is late for class today. If he wants to come into the classroom, what should he say? Then let the students to make a choice, here “can” and “could” “may” mean ability or permission. 2. Practice with some real situations
Students must be very interested in these situations.(Eddie wants to borrow some money from Hobo; A prince invites a pretty girl to dance; A girl in our class wants to drink water in class)
3. Practice with the exercises in our textbook.
Step IV. Presentation and practice of “what” and “how”
1. Go on with the example boy. He is a very clever boy.(What a clever boy he is!) Then more examples will be given to the students.(talk about an interesting film; listen to exciting music)
2. Change the sentences above into “how” exclamations. And then lead the students to come up with the rules.
3. Practice with some exercises and the exercise about Superman in our textbook. Step V. Activity(Are you able to praise others?)
Use “how” and “what” to praise your parents, your classmate, your teachers or your hero. In fact, there are a lot of beautiful people around us, cherish them and be a better man for them.
