教學目標
1.       Knowledge goal語言知識:
Students will be able to use the expression about whether young children should do chores freely.
2.       Language skill語言技能:
Students will be able to express their opinions about whether they should do chores.
3.       Learning Strategies學習策略:
Students will learn to skim the first or last sentence to find the main idea.
4.       Feelings and attitude 情感態度:
Students will learn to be independent and help with housework.
Students will learn to practice their critical thinking.
2學情分析
 
Students in Grade 8 have grasped basic vocabulary and sentences. They can express their own ideas about doing chores at home.
 
3重點難點
Students will talk about whether young people should do chores under the stress of schoolwork.
Students will find the main idea of the passage through skimming.
Students will learn to make up new sentences in new situations based on the understanding of the phrases and sentence patterns.
Students will be able to retell the letters by using the phrases and sentence patterns.

4.1第一學時
4.1.1教學活動
活動1【導入】warming up and lead in
?
1.         Greet students and ask the title of Unit 3.
2.         Ask students about the chores they know.
3.         Ask students about who’s in charge of the chores at home.
4.         Discuss about whether young people should do chores at home under the stress of too much homework.
活動2【活動】Skimming
?
Guide Ss to get the general idea of the letters.
How to find their opinions? Read every word or just the first sentence?
Read the first sentence and you will find the main idea of the letter.
Skim the first sentence of each letter and find whether they agree or disagree.
活動3【活動】Dig for details.
?
Ask students to read for the second time to find what are the pros and cons about kids doing chores according to Ms. Miller and Mr. Smith.
 
Help Ss to understand the meaning of the new words and phrases they’ve circled.
 
Give a certain situation and help students to use the words and phrases.
 
Circle the pros or cons and check answers with partners.
Present the items they’ve found in the letters.
Read the two letters and circle the words which are difficult .
Make new sentences in another context.
活動4【練習】Exchange and retell
?
Ask students to exchange the letters and read the other letter to get another point of view.
 
Check students’ understanding and practice rephrasing.
 
Desk mates exchange their letters and read again.
Ss retell the letter with the key phrases on the blackboard.
Present.
活動5【活動】Debate
Divide the students into two groups and guide them to express their own ideas with sufficient reasons.
 
Critical thinking
Every coin has two sides
 
Students who think young people should do housework stand up and express their ideas.
After that, the others express their opinions and reasons.
活動6【活動】Interview 
Peter is a reporter from Jiaoda TV Station. He wants to find out what parents and students’ opinions about whether young people should do chores at home.
Students work in a group of four and role-play the conversation.
(The reporter, Ms. Miller, Mr. Smith, and a student)
