Lesson Plan: The Mystery of the Red-headed Club 
—by Li Yifan, Xiaoshi High School 
Objectives: 
 1. Students are going to analyze the collected information to figure out the plot what happened to 
Mr Wilson in this first part; 
 2. Students are going to inquire the relationships among content, language and significance by 
relating facts to inferences about the mystery of the club; 
 3. Students are going to predict the resolution of the story using the literary techniques learned in 
this section.  
1. Lead in: 
  A picture of a trail of footprints are presented and T’s asking “What can you see in the picture?”    S: a footprint… many footprints(/a trail of footprints) 
   T: good! The footprints serve as ‘clues’ leading to our topic today. Can you guess what we are going to talk about today? 
      Ss’ answers: treasure hunting, stories, detective stories….  (引出重點詞匯 clue, detective, etc.)    T: Yes, we are going to read a detective story today. Before we start to read, can you tell me the five elements of a story? 
   S: Setting, characters, plot (beginning, development, resolution), climax and theme. 
   T: Very good! Today we are going to read a story written by Arthur Conan Doyle, The Mystery of the Red-headed Club. As we have discussed just now, characters are one of the most important elements in a story. So, please read and tell me how many characters are there and what’s the relationship between them?  
2. Skim and Fast Read: 
  Ss are able to find out the characters, give out information about the characters and the relationship between the characters. 
S: They are Mr Wilson, Sherlock Holmes, Dr Watson, Mr Vincent Spaulding and Mr Spears. T: What’s their relationships in the first story? 
S: Sherlock is the detective and Mr Wilson is the client; Watson and Sherlock are friends; and Mr Wilson is telling Dr Watson the story that he came across himself. 
T: Good! How about in the second story? And any information you can collect about the character? S: Mr Wilson is the employer who owns a green grocery and has red-hair as red as flames; 
  Mr Spaulding is the employee who works for Mr Wilson, earning half but worth more. Also, he is an enthusiastic photographer who often takes pictures and goes to the basement to process them. 
  Mr Spears is the staff working in the Red-headed Club and he chose Mr Wilson as a member of the club.  
3. As we know setting is also very important.  
T: Let’s have a look at setting where the story takes place. Where is Mr Wilson’s grocery? And where is the club? (Students are provided a map and they are required to point out the certain spot related to the case.) 
S: His grocery is in the City, in the alley behind the Bank of England in Short Street. And the club is in the 7 Pope Court, Fleet Street.  
  T: Now let’s come to the plot. From the pictures can you tell me how the story starts, develops and ends? 
                    
             
                    
                              Students are presented 6 pictures related to the story. And they are asked to tell the story with the help of the pictures. 
  S: Mr Wilson was suggested by Mr Spaulding to apply for the red-headed club.  
And he was told by Spaulding about the information of the club.  
He was pushed to the front by Spaulding and finally chosen by Mr Spears. He was first checked on every so often by Mr Spears. 
One day, he saw a sign that the club had been dissolved out of no reasons. 
  T: among the development, which one do you think the climax? And why? Give students 3 minutes to discuss. 
  S: the dissolving of the club is the climax, because the club is mysteriously dismissed and the end led to the case that Mr Wilson came to Detective Holmes.  
4. If you were Dr Watson, after hearing the story, how would you feel? 
  Ss are going to put themselves in the shoes of the detective and come up with adjectives to describe the case or describe the feeling of the detective. 
  S: interested, unusual, astonished, puzzled, peculiar, doubtful, etc.  
5. In this section, students are asked to work in groups to work out how the clues in the story led to the doubts the author wanted to cast to readers. 
  T: As we can see that the plot is very clear and plain, but the story will leave readers feelings of doubts. So I would like you guys to work in groups to find out the clues set by the author and also to conclude your doubts. 
For example, the clue I give is ‘Mr Wilson is a red-headed man and is chosen as the member of the club’. My doubt is why Mr Wilson is the very person who has been chosen to the club? (Are you clear?) 
  S1: Our group think that Mr Vincent Spaulding is not a red-headed man but he knows everything about the red-headed club and he is the one highly recommended Mr Wilson to apply. So our doubt is why Mr Spaulding so eagerly wanted Wilson to be a member of the club and we doubt that Mr Spaulding must have something to do with the club. 
  S2: Mr Wilson’s greengrocery is in the front of the Bank of England, and Mr Vincent is always running to the basement to process what he said his photos. So we doubt that whether Mr Vincent is really processing his photos or he may be doing something in the basement such as digging a tunnel to the Bank of England.   S3: …….  
In this group discussion section, the students are casting doubts in accordance with the clues the collected in the passage. Also they are asked to write the clues and the doubts down on a piece of paper and later on presented the clues and doubts in the front of the class.  
6. Jigsaw discussion: As Conan Doyle has once said, ’There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact.’ The facts or clues the author presented actually can be deceptive. In the next section, students are going to predict the rest of the story based on the clues. Also, the other group is going to discuss the writing technique employed in this detective story.  
T: So I would like to divide the class into 2 groups. Group 1, can you predict according to the clue what might happen in the story next? Group 2, as you can see the author sets down a series of clues in the passage before he draws to an end. This is a kind literary technique, called foreshadowing. Could you please 
 
                    
             
                    
                            have a group discussion, what other writing techniques has the author employed in detective story to make the story mysterious but also convincing? 
S:...... (Students share with each other their opinions in the group and then one representation is asked to speak on behalf of the group.)  
7. Homework: 
After reading this part of the story, you are going to contribute your inference (推理) to Dr Watson and Mr. Holmes based on the clues we have analysed. Also, you are expected to use one or two of the literary technique in your writing.
