Teaching targets
Knowledge and ability objectives:
1. To get students to know about the famous agricultural scientist Yuan Longping and his
achievement in producing hybrid rice and also the influence of his achievement in the world.
2. To lead students to get to know the attitude of Yuan Longping towards his job and life,
that is, he is always persistent and never gives up in his job, and he is satisfied with his current life and doesn’t care about money and being famous.
3. To make students have a better grasp of using proper reading strategies and skills,
such as skimming and scanning, word-guessing, paraphrasing and summarizing.
Strategy objectives:
1. By using pictures, Ss can be led into the situation quickly and as a result they will have a strong desire to know more about the topic.
2. By means of task-based language teaching, students can participate in group work to get more information about Yuan Longping and his achievement.
3. By cooperating, interacting and discussing, students’ abilities of communicating and expressing can be trained. Moral objectives:
First， Ss can be touched by learning about Yuan Longping’s attitude towards his job and life, and as a result learn from Yuan Longping. Second, by looking at the pictures and the international fact about hunger, Ss can realize how serious the problem of hunger is, and begin to think over what to do in the future.
Important points To learn about Yuan Longping and his achievement and also the influence of his achievement.

Leading in:
1. Show Ss some pictures about hunger and lead them to think over how serious the problem of hunger is and how urgent it is to solve the problem.
Students watch the picture, and interact with the teacher. By interacting with students, the teacher can lead in the person of this unit quickly. 2. Let students look at three
pictures of Yuan Longping, and ask them how much they know about him.
Students look at the pictures and think about the question. And then express their ideas.
By showing Ss the pictures of Yuan Longping, Ss can
realize that Dr Yuan has spent many years doing research on hybrid rice. And Ss can know
more about Yuan Longping by talking about the question.
Step III
Listening
1. Ask Ss to listen to the passage and summarize the main idea of the passage. Ss listen to the passage and fill in the blanks about the main idea of the passage. By listening to the passage, Ss can have a general idea of the passage and at the same
time practice their listening.
By filling in the blanks of the main idea of the passage, it can reduce the difficulties and encourage the Ss to go on learning the passage. Step IV
Skimming
Ask Ss to read the passage quickly and match the main idea of each paragraph.

Scanning
Ask Ss to read the passage carefully and find out some specific information of each paragraph. A question inserted in the scanning, that is, why did finding ways to grow more rice become Yuan Longping’s life goal? Ask Ss to answer the question and at the same time to paraphrase the answer.
Ss read the passage and discuss the answers to the questions with their partners. And at the same time answer the question and try to paraphrase the answer.
Ss can not only strengthen their understanding of detailed information but also practice their scanning skill and ability of paraphrasing.

Deep Understanding
Ask Ss to choose the best answer about three optional questions. Ss choose the best answer.

Ask Ss to discuss two questions about Yuan Longping.

Ss discuss the two questions with each other. By discussing the first question, Ss can get to know
the high virtue of Yuan Longping. By discussing the second question, Ss can realize the good qualities of Yuan Longping, and learn from him. This part intends to achieve the moral objective.
Step VIII
Homework:
1. Retell the passage in your own words. 2. Preview the language points in the passage. Students can finish the homework alone. By retelling, Ss can have a further understanding of the passage and at the same time practice their ability of
retelling. By previewing the
language points, Ss can make a good preparation for the next class.
