 Teaching Plan for Reading: The Winning Team
Tiantai Pingqiao Middle School   Xu Yangmei
 
1.      Analysis of the teaching material:
The topic of the reading material is about mistakes and teamwork. It is a story about a boy called Peter who made a mistake and gradually understood the true meaning of teamwork. By describing the actions and feelings of the character, the writer shows us the attitudes towards mistakes and tells the readers the meaning of team spirit.
 
2. Teaching Objectives:
Knowledge Objectives
⑴Students can understand the words and phrases through reading:
pull together, courage, weight, coach, kick…off, disappoint, let…down, relief, be hard on, nod, agreement
⑵Students can focus on the time sequence and the development of a story when reading it for the first time.
 
Ability Objectives
(1)   Students will be able to learn some reading skills like predicting, inferring and guessing the new words according to the context.
(2)   Students can describe their own stories and talk about their feelings.
 
Moral Objectives
A team is like a big family. Let’s pull together and learn from mistakes.
 
3. Teaching Emphases
Students will be able to figure out the structure of the passage.
Student will be able to describe their own stories.
 
4. Teaching Difficult Points
Students may find it difficult to fully understand the meaning behind the story and make up their own stories
 
5. Teaching Methods
PWP Model(pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading)

Chalk, PPT, blackboard.

2. Free talk
Divide the whole class into two teams and have a competition.
T: Let’s pull together and see which team will be the winning team.
To break the ice between the teacher and the students.
Step II
Pre-reading
1.  Brainstorming
T: Why could we win the game?
S: Because we pull together and never give up.
Because we have great players.

2.      Predicting
Show the picture. Ask Ss to predict:
n      What team was Peter on?
n      What mistake did he make?
1.       To elicit the topic.
 
 
 
2. To arouse Ss’ interest in reading and get them ready to read.
Step III
While-reading
 
1.      Let’s skim.
What mistake did Peter make?
Divide the passage into three parts and match the main idea of each part.
2.      Ask Ss to find out the time sequence.
3.      Let’s scan.
Read carefully and answer the questions in each part.
4.    Read for details
⑴Read and circle the words and sentences that show the character’s feelings.
⑵Guess the meanings of some new words according to the context.
1. Ss are led to use different reading strategies to understand the passage and figure out the structure.
 
 
2. Enjoy reading the passage.
 
Step IV
Post-reading
 
1.Role play the conversation between Peter and his father.
2. Further thinking
Why did Peter think he was on a winning team?
3. Groupwork
Ask Ss to discuss the true spirit of a winning team and make a report.
4.Let’s share.
Ask Ss to think about their own experiences about making mistakes. Follow the structure of a story to write a short passage and talk about their feelings and experience.
1. To make Ss understand the feelings of the characters.
2. To encourage Ss to find out the meaning behind the story in a critical thinking way.
3. To guide Ss to put what they’ve learned in the class into use.
Step V
Summary &
Homework
1.      Ask Ss to learn from mistakes and pull together.
2.    Homework
Level A:Retell Peter’s story.
Level B: Write down your own story and hand in.
1.To emphasize the moral objective.
2.To consolidate what Ss have learned in this class.
