Teaching aims:
To get some further information about the article;
To understand the uses of the important phrases and sentences in the article;
To know how to write a paragraph about how to be a good volunteer.
Teaching methods:
Task based teaching methods, situational teaching methods and cooperative group learning.
Teaching aids:
Blackboard, chalk, some pictures, music and PPT.
Teaching steps:
Step 1 Greetings:
T: Good morning, students. How is the weather today?
Ss: Good morning, Miss Chen. It’s sunny today.
T: Yes, it’s sunny. Do you want to play sports on such a sunny day?
Ss: Yes, we want.
T: Me Too. And last class, we have learned something about a big event—The Special Olympics World Games. Do you still remember the report?
Step 2 Revision
1、Look and say
T: Look at three pictures, first one, What’s this?
Ss: It’s the logo of the Special Olympics World Games. It looks like an eye.
T: Next one, who are they?
Ss: They are volunteers.
T: It’s great to work as volunteers like them, right? And what about the last picture? Who is she?
Ss: She is an athlete with intellectual disabilities.
2、Match
T: Here are four parts of this report. Can you match the main ideas with these paragraphs?
Ss: Para2, Para3, Para4, and Para1&5.
Step 3 Before reading
T: After learning this report, do you want to be a volunteer like Liu Ming? Since we all want to be good volunteers, Let’s learn more about this report this class to get more detailed information.
1、volunteer for the Special Olympics World Games   
  為夏季特奧會做志愿者
  volunteer  vi. & vt. 志愿做,義務做
 volunteer for ...  志愿做……;主動做……
volunteer to ...  志愿做……;主動提出……
(1)   Look at the picture and guess what the students volunteer to do.
Ss: Many volunteers (volunteer) volunteered (volunteer) to help (help) those old people in March.
(2)   Make a dialogue with your partner:
Which hero will be a good volunteer? Why?
A: Which hero will be a good volunteer?
B: ______________________________.
A: What can he volunteer to do?
B: ______________.  What about you?                            
A: I will volunteer to_________.
The teacher asks 3 groups to talk about this dialogue.
2、A volunteer should be……?
(1) T: It’s great that you all want to be volunteers. But why? Why do you want to be volunteers?
   Ss: It’s meaningful to work closely with athletes.
      We can help the athletes achieve their dreams.
(2)   T: Then how? How to be a good volunteer?
Be a volunteer with knowledge, skills and spirit(精神).
Step 4 While reading
1、  Be a volunteer with knowledge—some background knowledge about the Special Olympics World Games.
(1)   Answer some general questions about this game?
Q1: When did it hold?               Ss: In October 2007.
Q2: Where did it take place?          Ss: In Shanghai.
Q3: Why did people hold this special event?
(2)   Read paragraph2&3 carefully to fill in the blanks.

      T: Talk about the logo.

2、  Be a volunteer with skills
T: The volunteers should have language skills, communication skills and etc. In order to get these skills, they need to receive some training.
(1)   training n. 培訓;訓練
do some training 做一些訓練.
(2)   It was necessary for sb to do sth.
It is/was+ adj. + (for sb.)+ to do sth.
(對于某人來說,)做某事是……的。
能和這些特殊運動員合作真的很棒。

與運動員緊密合作很有意義。
It’s meaningful to work closely with athletes.
3、  Be a volunteer with Olympic spirit(精神)
(1)   What qualities should volunteers have?
Discuss--Do you think Liu Ming is a good volunteer?
T: Read para3&5carefully to find the reasons.
Ss:  He gave up his spare time for the event.
He provided support for the athletes…
He worked closely with the athletes.
(2)   achieve one’s dreams
T:What other qualities should volunteers have?
Ss: The volunteers get to help athletes achieve their dreams.
我認為你的夢想會實現的。
I think your dream will come true.
I think you will achieve your dream.
如果我們不懈努力,就能取得成功。
If we keep trying, we can achieve success.
(3)   What qualities should athletes have?
T: Different people have different qualities. What about Li Hua? We all know Li Hua is a special athlete. Let’s read Para4 quickly to talk about Li Hua.

Exercise1: Put them into one sentence:

Exercise2
— They donate lots of money to the charity.
— They are generous.
Ss: It is generous of them to donate money to the charity.
 
Step5: Post reading
1、  Task: Have an interview
T:Suppose(假如) you are Liu Ming . I’m a reporter from Meiling TV. I am going to have an interview with you.
R: What did your feelings change after the Game?
L: ___________________________.
R: What did you do for the Game?
L: ___________________________.
R: How do you like the Game?
L: ___________________________.
2、Conclusion: What makes the event a great success?
   Ss: The volunteers and athletes work closely with each other.
2、  Writing: How to be a good volunteer?
(1)   Question: What qualities(品質) or abilities should a volunteer have?
Ss: careful, warm-hearted, know about different cultures, strong, helpful, speak good English, communicate well with athletes, patient, generous, brave.
(2)   Writing: write a paragraph about how to be a good volunteer. 
T: I have prepared some useful expressions for you.

Step6:Homework:
1.Search for more information about the Special Olympics on the Internet.
Collect some information if possible.
