Reading :First Aid for Burns Teaching aims: 
(1). Knowledge aim: Learn first aid for burns and other common emergent injuries. Learn how to put a person in recovery position and rescue breathing. 
(2). Skill and ability aim: Practice reading skills, such as skimming and reading for details.   
(3). Emotional aim: Arouse students’ awareness of giving first aid on the victims in case of emergency.  
Key teaching points:  
How to do first aid for burns and other common injuries Difficult teaching points:  
(1) Distinguishing the characteristics of the three types of burns (2) How to put the victim in recovery position and rescue breathing Teaching methods:  
(1) Task-based Language Teaching; (2) Communicative Language Teaching; (3) Situation Language Teaching; Teaching aids: 
 A blackboard, a computer for multimedia, I Pads(for class use) and a doll . Teaching procedures:  Step 1. Leading-in 
Share three big numbers to show the importance of giving first aid in case of emergency and the necessity of learning first aid. Step 2. Skimming  
 Skim To get a general idea and structure of the text.  
 Task :Number them from 1 to 5 in the order the topics are covered.  ___ the three types of burns 
 ___ what to do if someone gets burned  ___ the functions of the skin   ___ the symptoms of burns   ___ how we get burns 
Step 3. Reading for details. 
Task : Find answers to the following questions. 1. What are the four functions of skin ? 2. What are the seven causes of burns? 
3. What are the three types of burns and their characteristics ? 
4. What are the six steps of first aid treatment? Write them on the blackboard with key words. Step 4. Discussion 
   According to what is learned today, discuss and find the mistakes in the following treatment of burns .  
1. Sam knocked over a kettle full of boiling water onto his legs. His legs became red, swollen and covered with blisters. Sam broke the blisters and poured icy water from the fridge onto the skin. 2. Mary's sleeve caught fire while she was cooking. Her arm looked terrible but it didn’t hurt. The skin was charred. Her husband took off her blouse and picked off  bits of the blouse stuck to the 
 
                    
             
                    
                            burn. He then placed butter on the burn and covered it with a wet bandage.  Step 5. Extended reading 
 Read First Aid Treatment for Common Injuries on students’ Pad.  And then act it out. Step 6. Further study 
 1.What to report when calling 120 ? 
 2.How to place the victim in recovery position ?  3.How to rescue breathing ? Step 6. Quiz  
Have a quiz about what the students learn at class. Step 7. Homework 
1. Write a letter to your principal politely asking whether he or she could organize the first aid courses.
