《英語(yǔ)課程標(biāo)準(zhǔn)》的總體目標(biāo)是學(xué)生綜合語(yǔ)言運(yùn)用能力的形成。而英語(yǔ)閱讀教學(xué)的目的不但是讓學(xué)生通過(guò)閱讀來(lái)獲取并掌握一定的語(yǔ)言知識(shí),而且要加強(qiáng)學(xué)生對(duì)文章內(nèi)容、信息結(jié)構(gòu)及閱讀技能的學(xué)習(xí)和培養(yǎng)。因此本節(jié)課的設(shè)計(jì),教師在教學(xué)過(guò)程中注重引導(dǎo)鼓勵(lì)學(xué)生從文章的整體結(jié)構(gòu)分析,到細(xì)節(jié)信息的捕捉;從接受理解課文內(nèi)容,到靈活運(yùn)用所學(xué)知識(shí);從書(shū)本,到課外;從師生互動(dòng),到小組合作。調(diào)動(dòng)聽(tīng)說(shuō)看等多種感官,在了解本話題知識(shí)的同時(shí),鍛煉正確的閱讀技巧,培養(yǎng)主動(dòng)學(xué)習(xí)和合作精神。 Teaching aims:
After learning the text, the students will be able to gain some knowledge about idioms especially the Biblical idioms. Students are expected to practice and reinforce their reading comprehension and improve their overall abilities.
Teaching procedures: Step1 Lead-in
1. Introduce three major religions in China and in the world 2. Introduce major religious books
3. Introduce Bible briefly, emphasizing that many basic concepts and principles of Western culture have come down from the Bible, and many common English phrases and expressions have their origin in the Bible as well. Then lead to the topic of this lesson.

Step 2 Fast reading
1. Scan the text and listen to the recording of the text. Think about the following 3 questions:
1) What is an idiom?
2) What language was the Bible first written in? 3) What idiom is often used to describe children? 2. Ask some students to answer the 3 questions.
Keys: 1) An idiom is a group of words or an expression whose meaning often can
not be understood by looking at the meanings of the separate words in it. 2) In Hebrew.
3) “Apple of their parents’ eye”.
3. The text can be divided into 4 parts. Discuss how to divide it in pairs with the help of the main ideas of each part. 1. What is an idiom? (Para______)
2. Why does the Bible have a lot of idiom? (Para______) 3. What are the features of Biblical idioms? (Para______) 4. Why should we learn idioms well? (Para______) Key: part 1 (para1) Part 2 (para2) Part3 (para3-6)
Part 4 (para7) Step 3 Detailed reading
1. Read the passage again carefully. Try to answer two questions.
Why does the Bible have a lot of idioms?
Because it was first written in Hebrew and Greek, both of which used many idioms. How is studying idioms useful in language learning?
1) improving your comprehension
2) Developing a high level of competence in your communication skills

3) Better understanding and appreciating the history and culture of
English-speaking countries.
2. Further read and find the idioms referred to in the passage and then give their meanings.
Keys: 6. by and by, feet of clay, to see the handwriting on the wall, kill the fatted calf, reap what we sow and apple of their parents.
Exercises: Choose the correct idiom from the article to complete each sentence below. 1) Debbie’s father always warned her to be nice to people she did not know, because we __________________
2) Sarah’s mother adores her; Sarah is_______________.
3) Wilson was disappointed when he learnt that the coach had ________. 4) She knew it might take a long time for her teammates to change their minds, but she believed that the new plan would work _________.
5) When my brother came back home from his trip to Europe, we ____________. 6) After his company suffered millions of dollars in losses, Joe _________ and left the company.

1 ▲打空氣 ( beating the air )出自《新約·哥林多前書(shū)》9章。
〔原文〕 所以我奔跑,不像無(wú)定向的。我斗拳,不像打空氣的。〔簡(jiǎn)釋〕 比喻白費(fèi)力氣。
2 ▲歸他永遠(yuǎn)的家 ( go to one’s long home )出自《舊約·傳道書(shū)》12章。 〔原文〕 人所愿的也都廢掉,因?yàn)槿藲w他永遠(yuǎn)的家。〔簡(jiǎn)釋〕 指死亡。 3 ▲在自己的葡萄樹(shù)、無(wú)花果樹(shù)下 ( Under one’s vine and fig tree )出自《舊約·列王記上》4章。又見(jiàn)《彌迦書(shū)》4章和《撒迦亞書(shū)》10章。
〔原文〕所羅門(mén)在世的日子,從但到別是巴的猶大人和以色列人,都在自己的葡萄樹(shù)下和無(wú)花果樹(shù)下安然居住。〔簡(jiǎn)釋〕 比喻安居樂(lè)業(yè)。
4 ▲肉中刺 ( thorn in the flesh )出自《新約·哥林多后書(shū)》12章。
〔原文〕又恐怕我因所得的啟示甚大,就過(guò)于自高,所以有一根刺加在我肉體上,就是撒但的差役,要攻擊我,免得我過(guò)于自高。 〔簡(jiǎn)釋〕 比喻煩惱的根源。 5 ▲自己眼中的梁木 (A Beam in one’s eye)出自《新約·馬太福音》7章。又見(jiàn)《路加福音》6章。
〔原文〕為什么看見(jiàn)你弟兄眼中有刺,卻不想自己眼中有梁木呢?你自己眼中有梁木,怎能對(duì)你弟兄說(shuō),容我去掉你眼中的刺呢?〔簡(jiǎn)釋〕 比喻自身存在的嚴(yán)重缺陷。
6 ▲把房子蓋在沙土上 ( built the house upon the sand )出自《新約·馬太福音》7章。
〔原文〕凡聽(tīng)見(jiàn)我這話不去行的,好比一個(gè)無(wú)知的人,把房子蓋在沙土上。 〔簡(jiǎn)釋〕 比喻基礎(chǔ)不牢固。

7 ▲猶大之吻 (A Judas’ Kiss)出自《新約·馬太福音》26章
〔原文〕那賣(mài)耶穌的,給了他們一個(gè)暗號(hào),說(shuō):“我與誰(shuí)親嘴,誰(shuí)就是他。你們可以拿住他。”猶大隨即到耶穌跟前說(shuō):“請(qǐng)拉比安!”就與他親嘴。耶穌對(duì)他說(shuō):“朋友,你來(lái)要做的事,就做罷。”于是那些人上前,下手拿住耶穌。 〔簡(jiǎn)釋〕 比喻可恥的叛賣(mài)、變節(jié)行為。
8 ▲看到果子可知樹(shù) (The tree is known by its fruit)出自《新約·馬太福音》12章。
〔原文〕你們或以為樹(shù)好,果子也好;樹(shù)壞,果子也壞。因?yàn)榭吹焦樱涂梢灾罉?shù)。 〔簡(jiǎn)釋〕 比喻觀其言行可知其人。
9 ▲便雅憫那一份 ( Benjamin’s mess )出自《舊約·創(chuàng)世紀(jì)》43章。
〔原文〕約瑟把他面前的食物分出來(lái),送給他們,但便雅憫所得的比別人多五倍。 〔簡(jiǎn)釋〕 英語(yǔ)指“最大的份額”。
10. ▲背起他的十字架 ( bear one’s cross )出自《新約·馬太福音》16章,又見(jiàn)《馬可福音》8章,《路加福音》23章。
〔原文〕于是耶穌對(duì)門(mén)徒說(shuō),若有人要跟從我,就當(dāng)舍己,背起他的十字架,來(lái)跟從我。 〔簡(jiǎn)釋〕 比喻忍受苦難。
11. ▲把珍珠丟在豬前 ( cast pearl before Swine )自《新約·馬太福音》7章。 〔原文〕不要把圣物給狗,也不要把你們的珍珠丟在豬前,恐怕他踐踏了珍珠,轉(zhuǎn)過(guò)來(lái)咬你們。
〔簡(jiǎn)釋〕 比喻把珍寶送給不識(shí)貨的人,明珠暗投。
12. doubting Thomas (懷疑的托馬斯) 源自《圣經(jīng)·新約·約翰福音》第20章。該篇講到耶穌復(fù)活后出現(xiàn)在眾人面前,十二門(mén)徒之一的托馬斯沒(méi)有親眼見(jiàn)到,聲稱(chēng)除非看到耶穌手上的釘痕,用手探入他的肋旁,否則不信他已復(fù)活。后來(lái)人們用“doubting Thomas”指那些不肯輕易相信別人的人。
13. clean hands (潔凈的手)
源自《圣經(jīng)·舊約·約伯記》第17章。“He that hath clean hands shall be stronger and stronger.”(“手潔的人將會(huì)愈有力。”)。現(xiàn)多與come out with、 with 或have 等詞連用,表示“廉潔、清白”。
14. as one man (一致地) 這是英語(yǔ)中最古老的成語(yǔ)之一,源自《圣經(jīng)·舊約·士師記》第20章。“So all the people got them up as one man.”(“所有人都團(tuán)結(jié)起來(lái)如同一個(gè)人。”) 現(xiàn)仍表示“(全體)一致地”。
