Learn about the inventions of Leonardo da Vinci. 2. Process & methods:
Develop students’ integrating skills, including listening, reading and speaking.
3. Emotion, attitude & value:
Arouse students’ awareness of being diligent and working hard, for “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.” Teaching focuses:
1. Get the students to understand the role of Leonardo da Vinci as an inventor. 2. Inform the students of the steps to discuss possibilities.
3. Enable the students to make a dialogue to discuss the possibilities of Leonardo da Vinci’s inventions according to his design drawings.
4. Develop students’ integrating skills, including listening, reading and speaking. Teaching difficulties:

1. Read to get a general grasp of the role of Leonardo da Vinci as an inventor. 2. Listen to learn the strategies of discussing possibilities. 3. Talk to use the strategies of discussing possibilities.

Teaching procedures: →Step 1: Lead-in
Watch a short video about one invention of Leonardo da Vinci. (The purpose is to arouse the students’ interest in today’s topic) →Step 2: Reading
1. Read the Para.1and answer the question:
Question: Why did Leonardo need to invent things for his employer when he was such a great painter? Answer: Because paintings did not always provide a steady income, he need to earn money in other ways. 2. Read the Para. 2, 3&4 and fill the blanks: What did Leonardo invent?
Leonardo da Vinci was really good at inventing __________ and was always interested in the use of mechanical ______. Based on it, he came up with many designs.
(The purpose is to get a general grasp of the role of Leonardo da Vinci as an inventor.) →Step 3: Listening: what can it be?
Q: Do you agree with the people on the tape? What do you think it was? Listen and fill the blanks.

Give at least two possibilities; list reasons for and against each possibility. Within 120 words.
