Activity 1：Read the passage to get the general idea ,find the following words and tell
each word’s part of speech according to the sentence they are in.(page 25) ash erupt eruption lave tidal wave volcano
Activity 2：Explain the connections among the words by referring to the passage.

Activity 3：Before listening to a conversation, answer these questions.(page 25) 1. Ash and lava poured down the mountain, setting fire to hundreds of houses. Does this mean that
(a) a fire started or (b) a fire ended?
2. Hundreds of houses caught fire when the lava reached them Does this mean that the fire started because of (a) a person or (b) a natural event?
3. We managed to get half the population to another island. Does this mean it was (a) an easy thing to do or (b) a difficult thing to do? 4. We put all the fires out. Does this mean the fires (a) are still burning or (b) have finished? IV. While-listening
Activity 4: Listen and answer the following questions.
First, go through the following questions and circle the key words to make it clear what information they need to catch.Afterwards, listen and answer the questions. Then,ask two volunteers to write their answers from the first listening on the blackboard.

Activity 5: Listen again and fill in the blanks.
While listening fill in the blanks and make sure of their answers to activity four at the same time.After listening ask two volunteers to write their answers from the second listening on the blackboard and check the answers.
Reporter: I'm standing in the 1 of Plymouth, the capital of Montserrat, where just 2 , a volcanic eruption took place. With me is Frank Savage, the 3 of the island. Mr Savage, thank you for talking to us. Savage: You're welcome.
Reporter: What exactly happened last week?
Savage: Well, the volcano erupted, and ash and lava poured down the
mountain towards the sea.Unfortunately, there are several villages in its path.
Reporter: That's terrible. Was anybody hurt?
Savage: No. Luckily, we had plenty of warning and I told people who lived
in the path of the ash and lava to leave the island. We managed to get 4 of the population to another island before the eruption took place.
Reporter: Why are you still here?
Savage: Well, I'm still working because there's a lot to do. Reporter: How many people live on the island?
Savage: 5 people live here and about 6 people have left. Reporter: Which areas are the most dangerous?
Savage: Well, the most dangerous places are between the volcano and the sea.
There are a lot of villages there. And it was very dangerous. Sadly, hundreds of houses caught fire when the lava reached them.
Reporter: Oh, I'm very sorry to hear that.
Savage: Thankfully, 7 was killed. Reporter: Are the houses still on fire?
Savage: No. Fortunately, we put all the fires out quite quickly.
Reporter: That's very good news. Well, it's a beautiful sunny day here in
Plymouth. Does this mean that the danger is over?
Savage: No! The volcano could erupt again! People must understand that it is
still very dangerous and they 8 their houses.
Reporter: OK—so that's the message from the governor don't go back to your
houses. When will people be able to return home?
Savage: 9 at the moment. Hopefully, it won't be too long. Reporter: Thank you for your time, Mr Savage. Savage: Thank you. V. Post-listening
Activity 6: Work in pairs and make an interview. 1.talk about how to make an interview
2.Work in pairs and make an interview about the earthquake struck Wenchuan. First, allow the students a few minutes to prepare and then ask them to present their interview.
Situation :Through the Time Machine, You have travelled back to Wenchuan, Sichuan province of the 13th May 2008. Student A : a reporter
