 skim the passage within limited time and get the setting of the story,  scan the passage within limited time and get some detailed information,  summarize information using clauses,  predict the plot with the help of hints 2. Language knowledge

 know what kind of sport ice-skating is.

 Teaching procedure Step 1. Leading in 
  Watch a short video about ice-skating and have a basic understanding of ice-skating.  
Step 2. Skimming  
  Skim the passage quickly and find out information about the setting of the story.     1. Who are the characters?  
2. Where does the story happen?  3. Why is Laurie there? 
Step 3. Scanning  
  Character 1: Laurie 
1. Read para.1-3 and underline information about Laurie. 2. Summarize the information using clauses.

1. Read para.8-13 and underline information about Jinny. 2. Summarize the information using clauses. 
Step 4. Plot analysis 
1. Read the passage and put the events in order 
a. Kathy welcomed Laurie back to competition and asked about her knee. b. When Laurie overcame her pain, Jinny Jordan opened the door. c. Laurie thought about the rainy night when she was in the accident. 
d. Laurie sat quietly in the dressing room and thought about her comeback. 
e. Kathy told Laurie about Jinny Jordan, and then Laurie realized that she would have to try a triple toe loop.
